Description

There are natural risks specific to substance abuse that every Peer Recovery worker should be aware of. Alcohol and substance abuse can intensify an individual’s vulnerability to contract an infectious disease, including STDs and blood borne illnesses. Bloodborne infectious diseases of concern include HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B and C which can be particularly difficult to manage and contain. With the rise in heroin use and the ongoing administration of drugs intravenously, it is important that the Peer Recovery workforce understand the relationship between administration and use of drugs and the contraction and progression of infectious diseases. It is equally important for Peer Recovery workers to be knowledgeable of preventative methods and equipment that should be used-especially for Peer Recovery workers working in environments like medical centers, recovery housing, etc. to prevent the spread of such diseases. This training will help Peer Recovery workers to identify infectious diseases, assess peer risk for infection, educate peers about disease prevention and treatment options, and assist peers in obtaining appropriate ongoing holistic care.
