Description

This textbook covers the material on the topic of transport phenomena, as taught in Chemical Engineering graduate programs. The objective of the course is to teach Chemical Engineering students to solve real-world problems in heat, mass, and momentum transfer. It teaches how to develop a mathematical model to describe the phenomena of interest, how to make appropriate assumptions, and how to choose a suitable solution method for the model. Starting from Fourier's law of heat transfer, Fick's law of diffusion, and Newton's viscosity law, the book sets out with a detailed overview of the mathematics of transport phenomena, with special attention to the similarities between the three fundamental transport laws. This is followed by an in-depth study of a number of advanced topics. The first advanced topic is fluid mechanics, including the Navier-Stokes equations, an introduction to turbulence modeling, and RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes). Next, transport phenomena between phases is covered, including film theory and two-film theory, surface renewal theories, and laminar and turbulent boundary layer theory. Transport phenomena in porous media is an important topic in Chemical Engineering, and it is covered in detail. A related chapter covers multicomponent diffusion, and its counterpart in porous media: the dusty-gas model. The book concludes with a number of smaller chapters on diffusion and reaction, radiation heat transfer, the kinetic gas theory, and the prediction of transport properties. The book focuses on pragmatic, real-world problem solving, with emphasis on numerical simulations in Matlab. Full codes are included in the book, and can also be downloaded for free on lecturenotesonline.com. Detailed derivations of the theories are included in Appendix, so interested readers can access them. This book is the companion of an online course, Advanced Transport Phenomena, offered by eConcordia.
