In 158 B.C., the line of Merari of the tribe of Levi, "the Hasmoneans," broke away from the Aaronic line of Levi of the house of "Zadok." After twenty years of protest, the Zadok line took up residence at Wadi Qumran in the eastern Judean desert, continuing their protest. The two feuded over the right to who should operate the Temple of Jerusalem even up to its destruction in 70 A.D. That other line of Levites, "The Hasmonaeans," ruled the temple in Jerusalem. Most biblical scholars and academics have hidden this rudimentary history. They have defused this history into mere segmented factoids and pigeonholed this controversy into a nothing-to-see, non-event. As a result, most Jewish Yeshiva and Christian Seminary students of either persuasion have little idea of the controversy within the covenant of Moses concerning these two groups. That controversy is directly tied to the "Gospel of the Kingdom" that Yeshua of Nazareth taught. Those in Judea at that time knew all too well of this controversy. It is well documented. It was the issue day, with an estimated 5000 Hasmonaean supporting rabbis pitting themselves against 4000 teachers of the righteousness of Essene persuasion. The two wrestled for the soul of the nation. "The sons of light," the Essenes, lost this wrestling match, just as foretold by the prophet Daniel. What followed was the wandering of the Jewish people without a homeland for nearly 2000 years. The key to understanding these two groups of people is only found in Yeshua of Nazareth kingdom parables; they are the history lessons of then and now for every soul.
