Description

Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV, is a virus that attacks the body's immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which are crucial for fighting infections. If left untreated, HIV reduces the number of these cells, making the body more vulnerable to infections and certain cancers. HIV is primarily transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, sharing of needles, and from mother to child during childbirth or breastfeeding. There are two main types of HIV namely, HIV-1 and HIV-2, with HIV-1 being the more prevalent and virulent strain globally. The progression of HIV can be divided into three stages: acute infection, clinical latency, and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). AIDS is the final stage, where the immune system is severely compromised, and opportunistic infections or cancers can occur. Diagnosis is typically done through blood tests that detect HIV antibodies or antigens. While there is no cure for HIV, antiretroviral therapy (ART) can significantly manage the virus, allowing individuals to lead healthier lives. ART reduces the viral load to undetectable levels, preventing transmission to others and delaying the progression to AIDS.
