Neurogastroenterology is a subspecialty of gastroenterology which deals with the diseases wherein disordered interactions take place between the central nervous system (CNS) and the gastrointestinal (GI) system. Neurogastroenterology deals with alterations taking place along the gut-brain axis. The brain-gut axis refers to the two-way biochemical signaling that takes place between the GI tract and the CNS. Neurogastroenterology deals with the neurology of the GI tract, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. It also focuses on the control of digestion through the enteric nervous system, the central nervous system, and integrative centers in sympathetic ganglia. The field of neurogastroenterology predominantly studies the diseases of the intrinsic enteric nervous system, i.e. the brain of the gut, which is a part of the nervous system and is responsible for controlling motility, endocrine secretions, and microcirculation of the gastrointestinal system.
