Description

Crohns disease is a chronic illness that afflicts millions of patients worldwide. Despite its increasing recognition as a medical specialty within gastroenterology, there has been little attention devoted to Crohns from a surgical perspective. This volume fills that void and acts as the first catalogue to address the surgical management of Crohns disease. The goal of this work was to provide surgeons with the latest medical and surgical information to manage patients with Crohns disease effectively. In this book, contributions from both gastroenterologists describe the history, diagnosis, nutrition, medical management, and surveillance of Crohns disease. Chapters from general and colorectal surgeons detail common clinical techniques, minimally invasive surgical approach and management of perianal disease. In addition, surgical complications specific to Crohns disease are also reviewed. This book provides all of the essential information needed in the surgical management of Crohns disease in one simple volume. It aims to be a useful resource for practicing surgeons and surgical residents as well as gastroenterologists. The authors wish readers to understand the complex decision making and sophisticated surgical techniques that these patients often demand. About the Author Stephen Kavic was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After majoring in Chemistry as an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania, he completed medical school at Yale University. Dr. Kavic also completed his surgery residency at Yale, serving as Administrative Chief Resident. Following residency, he pursued a two-year fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Kavic has a busy clinical practice in general surgery. He is currently an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. In addition, he has an active interest in surgical education and is the Program Director for the residency in general surgery, a seven-year residency program that has a complement of six residents per year.
