Description

The hypersensitivity of the immune system causes allergies. Asthma is one such example. It is a long-term inflammatory disease of the airways of the lungs, which is characterized by bronchospasm and reversible airflow obstruction. Some of the signs and symptoms of asthma are coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing and chest tightness. It is believed to be caused by a combination of environmental and genetic conditions. Environmental factors such as exposure to allergens and air pollution can trigger asthma. The diagnosis of asthma is based on an examination of symptoms and response to therapy and spirometry. There is no known cure for asthma. Triggers such as irritants and allergens can be avoided and managed by inhaling corticosteroids. For uncontrolled symptoms, antileukotriene agents and long-acting beta agonists may also be used.
