Description

Macular degeneration is a condition of the eye, characterized by loss of central vision caused due to a damaged macula. Signs and symptoms generally occurring in people with macular degeneration are distorted or blurred vision, loss in contrast sensitivity, visual hallucinations and flashing lights, drastic decrease in visual acuity, etc. In macular degeneration, there arises a progressive accumulation of drusen in the various parts of retina, leading to its damage over time. It can be divided into early, intermediate and late stages, depending on its progression. A complete eye exam can establish a diagnosis of the condition. There are no treatments for reversing the effects of macular degeneration. Innovative interventions such as cell based therapies involving bone marrow stem cells, retinal pigment epithelial transplantation and use of associated genetic markers are being explored for the management and early prediction of macular degeneration.
