Geriatric medicine is aimed at the promotion of health in older adults. There is no particular age at which patients are placed under the care of a geriatrician. It depends on the patient's needs. Owing to a physiologic decline in organs, older adults develop certain diseases and complications from even minor problems. Sometimes, even multiple problems can compound, often leading to polypharmacy. This can lead to adverse drug reactions and drug interactions. Geriatric medicine can have several specializations, depending on the care provided to the elderly.
