About the Author Courtney Dowdall, PhD, is an applied anthropologist and professional fellow at the American Anthropological Association. She has conducted research in the Western Highlands and Boca Costa regions of Guatemala, focusing on development studies, economic anthropology, globalisation, programme evaluation, and commodity certification. She employs a mixed-methods approach to fieldwork to produce evidence-based policy recommendations for comprehensive programme improvement. Ryan Klotz, PhD, is a data scientist at Sherpa Analytics. The primary focus of his research has been on rural development, agricultural sustainability, and farmer livelihoods, particularly the sociocultural and environmental consequences of agricultural modernisation in several indigenous Maya communities in Guatemala’s western highlands. He organises and conducts collaborative, community-based research in a variety of locations and works with local organisations and stakeholders to improve agricultural programmes for farmers across the developing world.
