It examines and compares the three pressure-driven membrane processes of choice-ultrafiltration, microfiltration, and nanofiltration-in removing natural organics, including disinfection by-products and compounds implicated as carcinogens. After presenting a detailed investigation of natural organics, the text follows with a careful analysis of the efficiencies and operating conditions of the main membrane processes, including discussions of costs and fouling. This reference book introduces membranes in water treatment and shows how various methods can be compared with regard to improving process design, reducing fouling, and selecting the most suitable process, given a variety of source water parameters. The book contains a most comprehensive literature survey on membranes, one that should be of great value to all investigators of membranes in drinking water.
