Accident management is very important for the prevention and mitigation of severe accidents in nuclear power plants. The processes that could occur during severe accidents in vessel-type light water reactors are well understood, but some uncertainties remain. Knowledge about severe accidents has been used for the development of accident management strategies. Most nuclear power plants that operate vessel-type reactors have already developed or are developing severe accident management programmes. The processes that could occur during severe accidents in channel-type reactors are not so well understood. The Chernobyl disaster demonstrated the necessity to achieve the same level of knowledge and to develop accident management programmes for RBMK-type reactors.
