Product Description This item is a package of Arrest, Search, and Investigation in North Carolina, 2016 and the 2018 Cumulative Supplement to Arrest, Search and Investigation. This book covers the legal rules that govern an officer's authority to enforce laws and to investigate criminal offenses. It also covers the basic rules of evidence in criminal cases. Supplementary material is placed in footnotes at the bottom of the text, and relevant case summary sections are located at the end of each chapter (for chapters 2-5). Footnotes to the text and case summary sections include appellate cases and statutory references to assist in researching particular issues. The book is current with case law through June 2016 and statutory law through the 2016 legislative session. It contains a subject index and a case index. The fifth edition replaces all prior editions and supplements. The 2018 supplement updates Arrest, Search, and Investigation in North Carolina, Fifth Edition, 2016. It is current through July 1, 2018, and so includes coverage of critical material such as the Supreme Court's Carpenter decision regarding cell phone tracking, new legislation regarding citizen-initiated criminal charges, and the impact on various investigative procedures of the Juvenile Justice Reinvestment Act, which increases the age of juvenile jurisdiction from 16 to 18. About the Author Jeff Welty joined the UNC School of Government in 2008 and works in the area of criminal law and procedure. His research interests include search and seizure, digital evidence, criminal pleadings, capital punishment, and firearms law. He serves as the director of the North Carolina Judicial College, which provides training and education to the state's judicial officials. Welty founded and contributes regularly to the North Carolina Criminal Law Blog, an award-winning resource visited by approximately 100,000 users each month, and his books about capital punishment and digital evidence are widely-used legal references. Welty earned a JD at Duke University School of Law, where he graduated in 1999 with highest honors. Robert L. Farb is a retired professor of public law and government, with a long history at the School of Government. He continues as an adjunct professor of public law and government to work on occasional special projects in criminal law and procedure, a field in which he is widely published.
