About the Author PATRICE L. SPATH , is based in Forest Grove, Oregon, and has extensive experience in hospital and medical staff quality and utilization management and external review activities, with a special interest in clinical paths. She has written several books and articles on these topics for private publishers and also for the American College of Surgeons and American Hospital Publishing, Inc. Ms. Spath currently serves as staff columnist for Hospital Peer Review and as an editorial board member for Topics in Health Record Management and Quality Management Update. During 1992–93 she served on a task group for the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research to develop a model for translating guidelines into medical review criteria. She is a past chairman of the quality assurance section of the American Health Information Management Association and member of the executive board of the National Association for Healthcare Quality. Ms. Spath is a private consultant offering awareness training, education, and publications addressing health care quality and resource management issues.
