This book is intended for practicing engineers and graduate students that want to get a good understanding of the tools and techniques used to analyze and design systems involving catenary cables and/or geometrically non linear bars. The amount of material presented in this book can be taught in two universities semesters or a mature student can work through the material in self study.The book first discusses common cable types used in the construction of bridges, stadia and other large structures as well as those used in the transmission of electrical power. Then it briefly describes the various structures that employ cables as the main load carrying elements. This is followed by a short review of hyperbolic functions which are necessary to mathematically describe the catenary cable’s behavior. This is then followed by the formulation of a catenary cable hanging between fixed ends subject to various loading conditions.Next, the concept of a geometrically nonlinear elements is introduced using a bar element that is pinned at both ends and can either take compression and tension, tension only or compression only. This is followed by the detailed development of a routine comprised of several functions that facilitates the solution of highly geometrically nonlinear problems using multiple bar elements. At this point the user is equipped to solve problems involving bar chains and ground constraints.Expanding on the formulation for the bar element, a series of similar functions are developed to capture the features of the catenary cable element. Then the previously developed solution routines are expanded to accommodate the solution of mixed bar and cable systems. This is followed by examples that explore the behavior of transmission systems that undergo temperature variations and ice loading with insulators and fixed and flexible transmission tower/pole structures. In the last section, the tuning of cable-stayed and suspension bridge systems is discussed using a series of detailed examples. This section also includes an example of a stadium light/display board structure suspended above the ground. Finally the effects of uniform and non-uniform wind loading of a very long span cable crossing is investigated in a series of examples.Throughout the book, fully described small functions are incorporated in most examples to facilitate their efficient solution. These functions are then frequently integrated in the functions of the subsequent examples to slowly build up all the routines necessary to solve complex multi cable and bar systems.
