Description

As the world continues to grapple with a range of practical development challenges that are directly linked to livelihood concerns about human well-being and declining living standards, often overlooked is the human right to development, which remains largely unfulfilled. In the face of successive global initiatives seeking to remedy these challenges, it has become urgent to ask what the universal recognition of the right to development implies if it cannot be translated into improved well-being for impoverished peoples around the world. The contributors in this timely volume argue that setbacks to development are deeply rooted in the failure to implement the right to development, which by nature guarantees equality of opportunities and equitable redistribution of the resources that contribute to better living standards. Assessing policy and practical measures (or the lack thereof), they offer practical suggestions for implementation that will make the right to development a reality for everyone. About the Author Carol C. Ngang is a Doctoral Researcher at the University of Pretoria, South Africa with research interests in the area of human rights and development, and humanitarian assistance. He is an alumnus of the Institute for International Humanitarian Affairs, Fordham University (IDHA 38) and has previously worked in development programs within the NGO sector in Cameroon and South Africa.Serges Djoyou Kamga is Associate Professor of Law at the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute, based at the University of South Africa. He holds a PhD in International Human Rights Law from the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa. His research over the years demonstrates a profound and sustained commitment to advancing knowledge about human rights in Africa, especially on the right to development in the African human rights system, human rights from cross cultural perspectives, and disability rights. Dr. Djoyou Kamga is the author of The Right to Development in the African Human Rights System (Routledge, 2018), and the co-editor of Perspectives on the Right to Development (Pretoria University Press, 2018). He is also the co-editor of the Cross Cultural Human Rights Review and the African Disability Rights Yearbook, the only journal that focuses on the rights of persons with disabilities in Africa. Dr. Djoyou Kamga is also a member of the Building Committee of the Cross-Cultural Human Rights Centre, based at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He will be a visiting professor for the spring 2019 semester in the Visiting Professor/Practitioner Program of the Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice at the University of Texas at Austin, USA.
