Lynchburg, Virginia, is not and has never been a typical Southern city. It grew and thrived not by commitment to agriculture, but manufacture. Though a slow and conservative city, Lynchburg has developed a unique identity. Its resolve, measured and passionless, is essentially Stoical. More than the sum of its people-parts, it is a city with a soul. Beginning with the early history of Virginia, this book covers seriatim Lynchburg’s infrastructure (such as its canal and railroad systems), religious/educative legacy, economics, key moments, and other defining aspects (including newspapers, politics, medicine, and entertainment). About the Author M. Andrew Holowchak, PhD, is a retired Professor of Philosophy and History, and editor of The Journal of Thomas Jefferson’s Life and Time. He is author and editor of over 50 books and nearly 175 published essays on topics such as ethics, ancient philosophy, science, psychoanalysis, and critical thinking. His current research focus is Thomas Jefferson―he is acknowledged by several scholars to be the world’s foremost authority on the thinking of Jefferson―and has published 16 books and over 100 essays on him. David M. Holowchak holds a BSBA and an MBA from Wayne State University, USA. He is retired and the author of the book, The Road Taken published in 2011.
