The book represents the most complete description of the scientific results obtained on a photochemical experiment described 110 years ago by the Italian scientist Emanuele Paternò. This detailed that the photochemical reaction between a carbonyl compound and an alkene gives a corresponding oxetane. This oxetane ring is present in several naturally occurring compounds and bioactive compounds, and can be obtained with high regio- and stereoselectivity. About the Author Professor Maurizio D’Auria held a fellowship at the Fondazione Donegani of Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Italy, from 1979 to 1981. He was Researcher at the University of Rome from 1981 until 1992, and also served as Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Basilicata, Italy, where he has been Full Professor since 2001. He is President of the Executive Committee of the European Photochemistry Association, and previously served as Editor-in-Chief of its magazine. He is the author of more than 300 scientific articles. Dr Sonia Stoia received her Master’s in Chemistry from the University of Basilicata, Italy, before earning an international PhD in Chemical Sciences at the same institution. She currently works with the Theoretical Chemistry Division of the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and teaches at the University of Basilicata as Adjunct Professor of Chemistry Elements.
