Description

This volume examines the theme of fusion in Caribbean dance from a wide range of perspectives, including its socio-cultural-historical formation. The contributions are drawn from a conference entitled “Caribbean Fusion Dance Works: Rituals of Modern Society”, which focused primarily on the Caribbean as a unique locale. However, chapters on dance fusions in other diasporic locations and the sustainability of dance as an art form are also included here in order to offer a sense of an inevitable and, in some instances, desirable evolution due to the globalizing forces that continue to influence dance. About the Author Neri Torres is the founder and artistic director of IFE-ILE Afro-Cuban Dance Company, based in Miami, USA. Currently, she is the Coordinator of Dance at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados and chair of the Biennial International Dance Conference, which she created in 2014. Aminata Cairo is the Lector of Inclusive Education at The Hague University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. She holds Master’s degrees in Clinical Psychology and Medical Anthropology and a PhD in Medical Anthropology. Laura Donnelly is a choreographer, teacher, and dancer who also writes and creates community based public art involving visual and word art. Donnelly taught extensively as an Assistant Professor of Dance at Kansas State University, USA. Sally Crawford-Shepherd is a dance practitioner, choreographer, academic, and lecturer. She completed her PhD in Dance Ethnography at De Montfort University in Leicester, England. She is currently the Coordinator for Dance at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus, in Trinidad. Nzinga Metzger completed her PhD in cultural anthropology at Florida State University and is currently Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Florida A&M University, USA. Dr Metzger is also a singer, dancer and folklorist.
