Description

This book presents cutting-edge research on the nature of grammatical systems developed by bilinguals and second language learners, as well as how speakers put these grammatical systems to use in processing language. The chapters provide a stimulating mix of theoretical contributions and experimental designs addressing a variety of research questions, such as learnability and access to Universal Grammar, native language influence, variability, and what propels language development from one stage to the next. Bilingual development is a special highlight here. The linguistic domains investigated are also extremely diverse, and include morphology, syntax, and language processing, as well as the interfaces between syntax and semantics and between syntax and discourse. The book covers the acquisition of an impressive number of languages including Arabic, Croatian, Chinese, English, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish as first or second languages. Through these diverse contributions, the reader will be able to identify and follow important new directions in which generative language acquisition is developing and expanding. About the Author Roumyana Slabakova is Professor and Chair of Applied Linguistics at the University of Southampton, UK, and Research Professor II at the Arctic University of Norway. Her publications include Telicity in the Second Language (2001), Meaning in the Second Language (2008), and Second Language Acquisition (2016). She co-edits the journal Second Language Research. James Corbet is a PhD student in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton, UK. He researches the developmental pathways of Spanish heritage speakers in the United Kingdom and continuing L1 effects on L2 acquisition. Laura Dominguez is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, UK. She is the Co-director of the Spanish Learner Language Oral Corpora (SPLLOC) project, and her research has appeared in journals such as Second Language Research, Lingua, Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism, the International Journal of Bilingualism, and Language Acquisition. Amber Dudley is a PhD student in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton, UK. She utilises psycholinguistic research methods such as eye tracking to study the acquisition of the subjunctive by second language speakers of French. Amy Wallington is a PhD student in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton, UK. She studies the development of the viewpoint aspectual system in advanced L2 learners of French in a university setting, with a particular interest in the roles played by both feature reassembly and input properties in this process.
