Description

Drawing on nine case studies and innovative empirical material from various regions of Uganda, this edited volume focuses on the interplay between humanitarian, economic and academic intervention on the one hand and mobility, permanent transit and (re-)settlement on the other – not least against the background of the versatile trajectories of flight and displacement and cultural practices that can be observed in the diverse environment of the country. In doing so, on a methodological level, this volume casts light on multifaceted processes of academic entanglements and knowledge production, on self-positioning processes of the researcher and the various role conflicts connected to research in complex settings. About the Author Jan Kühnemund completed his PhD at Berlin University of the Arts, Germany. He also holds an MA degree in Political Science, Visual Media and English. He currently works at Europa-Universität Flensburg, Germany. His publications include Man wird man – Geschlechtliche Identitäten im Spannungsfeld von Migration und Islam (2008) and Topographies of ‘Borderland Schengen’ – Documental Images of Undocumented Migration in European Borderlands (2018). Laura Tommila holds a BA in Media and Social Sciences from the University of Basel, Switzerland, and an MA in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR) from the University of Oldenburg, Germany. In her MA thesis, she critically analysed the written and visual representation of asylum seekers in Swiss media. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Department of Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology at the University of Basel, studying asylum seekers’ and refugees’ experiences with the Swiss asylum system.
