Description

The first volume of this highly collectable series brings the early years of Island Records to life. A Telegraph Best Music Book of 2023 A Shindig! Book of the Year 2023 A fifteen-year labour of love, the volumes of The Island Book of Records will fully document the label’s legendary analogue era, from 1959 onwards. Volume I covers the years 1959 to 1968, beginning with the label’s founding in Jamaica and covering its early success with Millie Small’s hit single ‘My Boy Lollipop’. Relocating to the UK in 1962, Island had further success with the Jamaican sound before signing the Spencer Davis Group in 1964. This move signalled an important shift to rock and folk music. By the end of the 1960s, Island was emerging as a major English label. Featuring material from recent interviews and from media interviews of the time, and including a comprehensive discography of 45s, The Island Book of Records Volume I is a collector’s dream.
