Essential College Physics Volume I provides students with an approachable and innovative introduction to key concepts in physics. Following the introductory Chapter 1, the remainder of Volume I is devoted to mechanics of particles and systems. It includes separate chapters on gravitation, fluids, and waves, including sound. The text concludes with a three-chapter sequence on thermodynamics. Each chapter features annotated figures and detailed problem-solving strategies to help students learn and retain the material with confidence. The second edition includes a new four-color format, with color coding of pedagogical features to call greater attention to each. Additionally, new applications have been added to make select topics more current and engaging, both throughout the text and, when possible, within problem sets. Essential College Physics Volume I is part of a two-volume set. It can be used independently or in tandem with Volume II. When combined, the two texts cover a full-year course in algebra-based physics, divided either into two semesters or three quarters. Andrew Rex holds a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Virginia. He is a professor of physics at the University of Puget Sound. Dr. Rex’s research focuses on the foundations of thermodynamics. He is the author of Modern Physics for Scientists and Engineers, Commonly Asked Questions in Physics, and the third edition of Finn’s Thermal Physics. Richard Wolfson holds a Ph.D. in physics from Dartmouth College. He is the Benjamin F. Wissler Professor Emeritus of Physics at Middlebury College. Dr. Wolfson’s research focuses on the Sun, climate change, and solar energy. He is the author of Nuclear Choices: A Citizen’s Guide to Nuclear Technology; Simply Einstein: Relativity Demystified; Energy, Environment, and Climate; and Essential University Physics.
