Description

This study examines the relationship between the Milwaukee Police Department and the Latino community in the second half of the twentieth century. Review This timely book expands the conversation about policing and communities of color by placing Latinas/os at the center of a critical and contentious social issue. The author's personal and professional experience as a Chicano community member and law enforcement officer provides important context that will inform how we understand social change in law enforcement.--Eric Castillo, Springfield College Guajardo offers one of the rare, firsthand accounts of a Latino police officer's experiences integrating an urban police force. His research represents an original exploration of the complex history of Latino/a police officers and their experiences navigating the racial politics of an urban police department. Guajardo's history of the National Latino Police Officers Association is a particularly valuable contribution.--Joseph A. Rodriguez, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee About the Author Antonio G. Guajardo, Jr. received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
