The close anatomical proximity of the colon, rectum and anus to the gynecologic and urologic organs often results in a disease affecting one of these organ systems to create complications in another. Reoperation on this anatomic area is often necessitated by cancer recurrence, adhesive disease, recurrence of pelvic prolapse disorders as well as in the execution of multi-staged procedures. Many of the diseases, including cancer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, prolapse, incontinence, and fistulas also necessitate reoperations—thus increasing the complexity and difficulty in achieving successful surgical management.
