Description

Product Description Multicultural Education in an Age of Globalization: Compelling Issues for Engagement, starts out with a discussion of western colonization of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the residual effects of colonialism in the forms of colonial mindset of power, dominance, and white racial superiority that have continued to challenge the hopes of a peaceful and more harmonious exchange and interaction in the 21st century global communities. Issues such as white privilege and cultural humility are discussed in-depth. Subsequently, the idea of globalization and the concept of global citizenship are also addressed in light of their implications for multicultural education curriculum and practice in the 21st century classrooms. The book identifies and discusses compelling issues that must be carefully addressed as we undertake multicultural education in the 21st century educational setting: whether in the K-`12 or higher education setting. Such issues include Affirmative Action, Gender Equity issues, Religion in the public school setting, and the problem of Poverty in the 21st century societies. Review I highly recommend "Multicultural Education in an Age of Globalization: Compelling Issues for Engagement. Dr. DomNwachukwu provides the reader with a significant overview of the challenges and opportunities available to all of us as we consider these compelling issues--poverty, diversity, globalization, affirmative action, gender, race/ethnicity, and other multicultural issues. The use of U.S. court cases to further illustrate historic and contemporary legal opinion on these issues is a context that I found particularly helpful and insightful. At a time when there is much controversy and a seeming inability for civil discourse, "Multicultural Education in an Age of Globalization" is a book that will provide educators of all levels with the information and analysis foundational to greater understanding, which will then inform our capacity to facilitate critical conversations among our students and our colleagues.--Lynn M. Gangone, EdD, President and CEO, American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Multicultural Education in an Age of Globalization: Compelling Issues for Engagement is a well-timed book. In the United States, high profile political leaders are fanning the flames of intolerance and fear among the citizenry. Courts are refusing to hear cases of racial discrimination, businesses are overlooking employees of color for promotion and salary increases, and public schools are talking about equity and quality education; however, fewer and fewer resources are being allocated for that purpose. Global challenges are even more significant, with increasing poverty, health disparities, religious intolerance, gender inequity, and women empowerment impediments. I congratulate Dr. DomNwachukwu on his artful ability to piece together a historical overview of colonialism and its legacy with current issues of globalization, gender, religion, and economic challenges facing educators and families in the twenty-first century. Multicultural Education in an Age of Globalization: Compelling Issues for Engagement gives a sobering account of the challenges of diversity and multiculturalism an age of globalization.--Sherwood Thompson, PhD, editor, Encyclopedia of Diversity and Social Justice; president, The Association for the Advancement of Educational Research; president, The Association for the Advancement of Educational Research This author again mixes well-documented history, a wide range of contemporary sources, pertinent case studies, and his own personal commitment to social justice and effective education.--Alan H. Jones, PhD, publisher, Caddo Gap Press; editor, Multicultural Education; executive secretary, California Council on Teacher Education About the Author Chinaka Samuel DomNwachukwu is a Professor of Multicultural Education and Associate Dean for Diversity and Values at the School of Education, Azu
