Description

Product Description In 2015, at the 150th anniversary of Jean Sibelius’ birth, research about his music and personality is more active than ever. Recent discoveries about the musical, literary, artistic, political, and social life around him have decisively widened the scope of scholarly discussion. As part of the anniversary celebrations, a great number of Sibelius scholars gathered in Hämeenlinna, his birth town, for a conference leading up to his birthday on December 8. This volume draws upon the most current achievements of Sibelius research. It brings together the diverse – and sometimes even divergent – viewpoints that emerged from this international meeting. These studies cover all of the genres in Sibelius’ production: orchestral works, incidental music, piano and chamber music, and songs, including both well-known works and rarities, and even some fresh discoveries. The chapters in this book are also a welcome reminder of the manifold sources of inspiration: the music of his contemporaries, nature, literature, and visual art. The versatility of Sibelius’ output, and the richness of his creative imagination are presented here to any reader interested to learn more about the music of the Finnish master. About the Author Daniel Grimley is Professor of Music and a Fellow of Merton College at the University of Oxford. His research interests are in Nordic music, cultural geography, and the environmental humanities (with particular reference to landscape). His books include Grieg: Music, Landscape and Norwegian Identity (2006), Carl Nielsen and the Idea of Modernism (2010), and, as editor and contributor, Jean Sibelius and his World (2011). Tim Howell is Reader in Music at the University of York, UK, where he specializes in the analysis of new music. An internationally-recognized authority on the music of Sibelius, his research has now broadened to encompass contemporary Finnish music as reflected in two major publications After Sibelius: Studies in Finnish Music and Kaija Saariaho: Visions, Narratives, Dialogues. Veijo Murtomäki is Professor of Music History at Sibelius Academy at the University of Arts, Helsinki. He writes on music for the daily newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Jean Sibelius Works. His books include Symphonic Unity: The development of formal thinking in the Symphonies of Sibelius (1993), and Jean Sibelius ja isänmaa [Jean Sibelius and Fatherland] (2007). He is coeditor of Sibelius Forum (1998), Sibelius Studies (2001), Sibelius Forum II (2003), and Sibelius in the Old and New World (2010). Timo Virtanen is editor-in-chief of the complete critical edition Jean Sibelius Works (in the National Library of Finland, and is Docent (Adjunct Professor) of Music Philology at Sibelius Academy at the University of Arts, Helsinki. He has edited Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3, two versions of Cassazione, and two versions of the Violin Concerto in the series of Sibelius’s collected works.
