Description

In March 2014, the University of Delaware’s Resident Ensemble Players staged the first Part of Goethe’s Faust, adapted and directed by Heinz-Uwe Haus, which forms the centrepiece and raison d’être of this book. This book tracks the creative process of Haus’s adaptation of the play and his attempts to elicit responses from his international networks to his question: how is Goethe’s Faust relevant today? It brings together comments from stage and costume designers as they brought their own creativity and understanding of the audience to bear on the play, and presents a brief record of the production itself, through stage directions and the photography of Bill Browning. The book then explores the reactions the production has elicited amongst some of its audience. About the Author Heinz-Uwe Haus is an internationally renowned director, and is considered one of the world’s leading authorities on Bertolt Brecht. Educated and trained in Germany at the Film Academy Potsdam-Babelsberg, as well as at the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin, Dr Haus began his long artistic and academic career as director at the Deutsches Theater Berlin, and as founding member of the East German Directing Institute and Head of its Directing Department. In addition to his work in Germany, he has directed for the National Theatres of Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey, and worked with companies from Chile, Finland, Italy, South Korea, Canada, and the United States. His productions have appeared at various festivals throughout Europe. Dr Haus has been a guest professor at more than a dozen North American universities, and has given more than 500 lectures and workshops worldwide. In addition to publishing in his field, he writes about intercultural and political topics in German, English and Greek media. David W. Lovell is a Professor of International and Political Studies and Head of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at UNSW Canberra at the Australian Defence Force Academy. He holds a PhD in the field of the History of Ideas, and co-edits The European Legacy and is a member of the Australian Committee of the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific. In 2005, he was the only non-European to be invited to the EU’s “A Soul for Europe” initiative in Budapest, and, in 2006, he spoke on harmony and governance at the Beijing Forum. He has written or edited more than fifteen books on topics including military ethics, Asia-Pacific security, Australian politics, communist and post-communist systems, and the history of ideas.
