Description

This book assesses the past 20 years of development of international economic law in time for the WTO’s 20th Anniversary, and forecasts the future of international economic law. This edited volume brings together experts in the Asia-Pacific region, from a range of backgrounds, to provide perspectives on many issues that arise from the international economic law experience, focusing on its legal significance and likely impact on multilateralism. The past two decades have seen a significant proliferation of regional trade agreements and a lack of multilateral governance of finance around the world. How to respond to these challenges and how to reform the WTO jurisprudence and process to co-ordinate global and regional mechanisms have become compelling questions for large-scale discussions and systemic analysis. This book provides vital insights into just how to improve multilateral trading governance and to recalibrate international economic law in the twenty-first century. About the Author Won-Mog Choi is a Professor of Law at Ewha Womans University and Director of the WTO Law Center at Seoul. He previously served as the President of the Korea Society of International Economic Law and is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Korean Journal of International and Comparative Law. Professor Choi is a member of the editorial boards of a number of renowned journals, including the Journal of International Economic Law. Having received his legal education in Korea and the US, Won-Mog has provided legal and policy advice to the majority of recent trade negotiations in which Korea has participated. He has also spent time as a Visiting Professor and Professorial Fellow at a number of academic institutions, including the National University of Singapore, Hong Kong University, the University of New South Wales at Sydney, and Southwest University of Political Science and Law of China. Prior to joining the faculty at Ewha, he worked for the Foreign Ministry of Korea as a diplomatic officer in charge of numerous trade issues. He has more than 80 publications to his credit, and is widely recognized as a renowned columnist in Korea. His research studies on the WTO Agreement and FTA issues are globally recognized as authoritative, and are collected in the Max Planck Encyclopedia of Public International Law.
