Description

Nina Balatka (First published 1865) By Anthony Trollope Beautiful young Nina Balatka, the daughter of a bankrupt Prague merchant, falls in love with the son of her father’s former Jewish partner. Nina’s relatives are determined to stop her wedding to Anton and plot to give him cause to doubt her devotion. Nina Balatka differs from Anthony Trollope's usual novels in several respects. The story is set in Prague instead of the British isles. The hero and heroine are engaged at the opening and Anton Trendellsohn is a successful businessman in his mid-thirties — not the usual Trollopian hero in his early twenties still finding himself. But what really sets this novel apart, and what makes it a masterpiece, is the remarkable (for the year 1865) opening line: "Nina Balatka was a maiden of Prague, born of Christian parents, and herself a Christian — but she loved a *; and this is her story."
