Description

Product Description This volume analyzes determinants of pro-poor growth in eight countries. It emphasises the role of regional inequality, price and policy reforms as well as political economy issues affecting pro-poor growth at the country level. It also analyzes the impact of agricultural, labour market policies, macroeconomics and natural resource policies. Review 'Empirical evidence shows that economic growth has a varying impact on poverty reduction. Poverty falls less with growth when the distribution of income worsens than when it remains unchanged or becomes more progressive. Understanding the distributional consequences of growth and how they are affected by poverty, as exemplified in this book, is therefore essential to the analysis of development.' - François Bourguignon, Vice-President and Chief Economist, The World Bank 'The detailed case studies in this excellent volume, from Africa, Asia and Latin America, will prove useful to researchers as they debate the best methods for analysing pro-poor growth and to policy-makers as they debate alternative policy packages to get pro-poor growth.' - Ravi Kanbur, T. H. Lee Professor of World Affairs, Cornell University 'Pro-poor growth lies at the heart of successful development strategies. By dissecting the distributional impact of alternative policies, this book provides an invaluable guide to understanding the key ingredients of a pro-poor growth programme.' - Anthony Shorrocks, Director, World Institute for Development Economics Research, United Nations University '...the book is not only relevant to policy makers but is also of high academic interest and can be recommended as a textbook for students and a practical guide for pro-poor growth researchers and professionals.' - Tobias Knedlik, African Development Perspectives Yearbook About the Author ERNEST ARYEETEY Professor of Economics, University of Ghana and Director, Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), Ghana JEAN-PAUL AZAM Professor of Economics, University of Toulouse and Institut Universitaire de France, France THOMAS BONSCHAB Project Manager, German Technical Co-operation (GTZ), Germany MELANIE GROSSE Third-year PhD Student of Economics, University of Göttingen, Germany ISABEL GÜNTHER Researcher and Teaching Assistant, Department of Economics, University of Göttingen, Germany RAINER KLUMP Professor of Economics, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University Frankfurt, Germany JANN LAY Research Associate, Kiel Institute for the World Economy, Germany WOJCIECH PACZYNSKI Economist, Centre for Social and Economic Research (CASE), Poland ARTUR RADZIWILL Vice President, Centre for Social and Economic Research (CASE), Poland AGNIESZKA SOWA Researcher, Centre for Social and Economic Research (CASE), Poland JULIUS SPATZ Economic Advisor and Head, Pro-Poor Growth Team, German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), Germany RAINER THIELE Head, Research Area 'Poverty Reduction, Equity, and Development', Kiel Institute for the World Economy, Germany JAMES THURLOW Post-doctoral Research Fellow, International Food Policy Research Institute, USA C.
