Description

This volume collects the best of those papers dealing with the European Union that were presented at the 13th Congress of the International Economic Association held in Lisbon in September 2002. The volume starts with the address to the Congress by Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission, who sets the tone for the other papers by describing and evaluating two of the greatest past and future accomplishments of the EU: economic and monetary union (EMU), and the coming enlargement of the EU to include ten more countries from Central and Eastern Europe. Other authors deal in detail with various aspects of these and other issues, using a mixture of theoretical, empirical, and other tools. Together, all of these papers give readers a broad ranging sample of the major issues confronting the EU and of the research that is ongoing to address these issues from multiple perspectives. About the Author ALAN V. DEARDORFF is John W. Sweetland Professor of International Economics and Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the University of Michigan, USA, where he has been on the faculty since 1970. He is co-author, with Robert M. Stern, of The Michigan Model of World Production and Trade, Computational Analysis of Global Trading Arrangements, and Measurement of Nontariff Barriers.
