Essential Spelling and Word Knowledge: Handbook An online through morphology, etymology, and application of spelling rules. This handbook contains the teaching, planning, and assessment support needed to deliver the programme to children in Y3/P4–Y6/P7. Features: • 3 x 20-minute whole-class sessions per week from Years 3–6, sustaining the focus on word development post-phonics. • Children study one word family per week, introduced through a morpheme grid based on a root morpheme (sometimes a prefix or suffix). • Simple, consistent lesson structure – one easy-to-learn method and framework used for every session. • Logical, iterative progression and recursive, repeated learning means children build on what they know, using the same prefixes, suffixes, and rules again and again. • Consistent format and structure reduces cognitive load for children. • No lesson planning or marking required for teachers. • Matched to all curricula, including full coverage of the National Curriculum for England spelling criteria and all statutory spelling lists for Y3&4 and Y5&6. Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) is a Department for Education validated synthetic phonics programme, developed by the Knowledge Schools Trust English Hub to help children learn to read quickly and confidently. Structured around daily lessons and matched to the progression of the original Letters and Sounds framework, ELS provides a clear, systematic approach to phonics. Each stage is supported by engaging decodable books, interactive resources, and practical guidance for parents and teachers. Used in classrooms across the UK, ELS is designed to build fluent readers, confident speakers, and willing writers. Affordable, flexible, and easy to implement, it works seamlessly with existing resources while offering everything needed to support children's literacy journey both at school and at home.
