Description

This open access book explores how different spatial geographies emerged, adapted or were transformed in various occupied and colonial settings around Asia, showing how the experiences of those living under occupation shaped and was shaped by new interpretations and typologies of ‘space’. With case studies across South, Southeast and East Asia and through a variety of disciplinary perspectives, Spatial Histories of Occupation adopts a trans-Asian comparative approach to show how the experiences of occupation and colonialism shifted under particular spatial typologies, particularly in urban, maritime and rural settings. Revealing the similarities, differences and connections that existed between and across different spaces of foreign occupation and colonialism in modern Asian history, this book shows how a focus on historical geography and ‘space’ can revise our broader categories and conceptualisations related to occupation; be it under colonial, wartime or Cold War powers. The open access edition of this book is available under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by The European Research Council. Review This interdisciplinary collection reveals occupation and colonisation as comparable spatial realms. But these spaces are not motionless: this is a book about mobility and motility. The authors challenge readers to think anew about how occupation changes and controls the movement of, and interactions between, the various bodies within these spaces. --Christine de Matos, Associate Dean Research, Faculty of Arts & Sciences and Business & Law, The University of Notre Dame Australia, Australia This book provides a fresh and essential perspective on the spatial history of colonial and occupied Asia from the Andamans and Afghanistan to Japan and the Philippines. By employing a broad category of ‘occupation’ across space and varying scales, the authors invite us to rethink our assumptions about power and territory in Asia and beyond. --Su Lin Lewis, Associate Professor in Modern Global History, University of Bristol, UK Spatial Histories of Occupation is a deeply researched, kaleidoscopic tour de force that ventures into rarely described environments in Southeast Asia and beyond that results in a provocative query on the social and environmental legacies of foreign occupation in Asia. --David Biggs, Professor of History, UC Riverside, USA About the Author David Baillargeon is Assistant Professor of History at University of Texas at Arlington, USA. A specialist in the history of Modern Britain and the British Empire, he was a European Research Council (ERC) research associate and research fellow at the University of Nottingham, UK. Jeremy E. Taylor is Associate Professor in Modern Asian History at the University of Nottingham, UK. He is the author of Rethinking Transnational Chinese Cinemas (2011) and has published articles in over 25 journals. Jeremy is Principal Investigator on the European Research Council funded project 'Cultures of Occupation in Twentieth Century Asia'.
