For George Orwell, the pamphlet was one of the most powerful of political tools. Through the 20th century and beyond, artists have worked and acted provocatively and polemically with text, images and performance, publishing writings and producing pamphlets and manifestos. However, very little has been written about either history of this practice or the contemporary relevance to art and politics. Art, Politics and the Pamphleteer seeks to provide a unique insight into the exciting forms pamphlets are currently taking and too discuss their continued relevance to political resistance. The book will seek to: · Situate contemporary practices in relation to historical traditions · Outline some of the concepts relating to protest, dissent and provocation · Provide a focus for contemporary arts turn to politics using the pamphlet as model · Address art and aesthetics in response to recent protest and social concerns (e.g. Occupy movement) · Interrogate contrasting approaches to presenting argument and art and political discourse Art, Politics and the Pamphleteer will also feature never-before-seen and rare pamphlets from archives and collections across the world with accompanying commentary from world experts in these works.
