Description

This book explores migrant's global social remittances and their impacts on Europe. Exploring the topic from a range of disciplines including sociology, anthropology, geography and political science, the authors present empirical analyses covering a wide selection of international contexts across Europe, India, Iraq, Bolivia, Congo, Lebanon and Thailand. The book presents migrants not as Europe’s ‘cultural others’ but as an integral part of Europe’s global connection, and scrutinises the flows of knowledge, ideas, money, objects and values which result from the process of migration, rather than the migrants themselves.A valuable contribution to the literature on migrant transnationalism and globalisation, this book will appeal to scholars across the social sciences.  Review “This thought-provoking volume gives a boost to debates about social remittances. Through solid ethnography and critical theorizing, the authors demonstrate both the potential and the pitfalls of this influential and seductive concept. The chapters locate social remittances within the wider socio-cultural dynamics of migration, examining a range of transnational connections within and beyond Europe. (Jørgen Carling, Peace Research Institute Oslo, Norway) “A fresh investigation into the ways in which migration, globalisation and Europe interact, examined through the lens of social remittances. The authors skillfully show how understanding the local meaning of remitting helps illuminate global processes of social change. An excellent resource for students and scholars alike, this collection contributes to balancing the North American scholarship on social remittances, whilst highlighting the need for a Global South-centred approach.” (Julie Vullnetari, University of Southampton, UK)“This book makes an important contribution to the multidisciplinary discussions about social remittances. Nowicka and Šerbedžija contextualize and clarify the amorphous concept and map its wide empirical range through a series of case studies. They rightly emphasize the importance of social network analysis for a better understanding of the conditions that shape remittance circulation over time.” (Gwendolyn Sasse, University of Oxford, UK) From the Back Cover This book explores migrant's global social remittances and their impacts on Europe.
