This edition was prepared in 1898-99; but as it had to wait its turn on the list of the Early English Text Society, it has been completely revised, and extended in the light of several fresh publications on the subject, which have appeared in the meantime. My thanks are due to Dr. Furnivall for good acdvice on many occasions, and to Professor Manly, of the University of Chicago, for reading the proofs. About the Author Edith Rickert was an influential medieval scholar at the University of Chicago.
