Description

This book's 50-plus lessons-each based on a different picture book or story-will help classroom teachers build a foundation for teaching math, science, and social studies concepts to their students. Each lesson uses children's literature to make challenging, abstract concepts relevant to children's lives, inviting them to learn these concepts while responding to a story's illustrations, theme, characters, and plot. The lessons also demonstrate how teachers can use children's literature to meet national standards in math, science, and social studies. Chapters 1 through 5 set the stage for using picture books, discussing the effective, imaginative integration of literature into the classroom. Teachers will learn to create an environment that ensures that when children and books come together, the experience is enjoyable and thought provoking. Chapters 6 through 9 provide individual lessons, by grade level, with detailed activities based on specific books. Review "Great book, and just what I was looking for! There's a great mix of information about theory and reasons for integrating literature in all areas of the curriculum and useful, practical examples and suggestions." Carolyn Hall, instructor for the Maine Educators' Consortium "After you sent me [this book and Integrating Literature in the Content Areas], I realized they are exactly what I was looking for to incorporate content literacy into Children's Lit and Children's Lit into content area literacy." Rebecca Miller, Tarleton University One feature I find interesting is the format of the lesson plans. They are very teacher friendly and support teachers in looking at children books as a core resource to teach literacy across the curriculum." Antonio Causarno, University Of Mary Washington "It is exactly what I need for student teachers." Jane A. Thompson, Texas A&M University-Commerce "Excellent resource for both preservice and inservice teachers. Great selections add to professional libraries. Lesson plan format is especially helpful to busy teachers." Trena Wilkerson, Baylor University "I use the book and have for years .. .my copy is all beat up ... great resource." Frank D'Angelo, Bloomsburg University About the Author Lynn Columba, Ph.D., has taught in grades 1 through 8 and as an instructor at the University of Louisville. She is now an associate professor at Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in the Department of Education and Human Services. There she teaches courses in elementary and secondary mathematics methods; her research focuses on facilitating students to make meaning in the mathematics classroom. Cathy Y. Kim is a faculty member in the Education Department at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where she teaches literacy education courses for elementary and secondary teacher candidates. Her areas of interest are comprehension strategies, vocabulary development and instruction, and content area literacy. Alden J. Moe, Ph.D., is a Professor Emeritus at Rollins College, where he was the Richard James Mertz Professor of Education and a specialist in literacy learning.
