Description

Product Description Bringing together a selection of readings that represent some of the most important trends and topics in urban scholarship today, American Urban Politics in a Global Age provides historical context and contemporary commentaries on the economy, politics, culture and identity of American cities. The 8th edition of this well-rounded and popular urban politics reader maintains the wide variety of reading selections it is known for, as well as many "classics," while adapting to current events and developments in urban politics. All-new readings and important editorial commentary include: Recent political debates about policing, race and ethnicity in the urban environment, and "post-racial politics" A discussion of gender politics, especially in the wake of the 2016 presidential election cycle, in cities as well as nationwide An exploration of the threat of natural disasters, and dialogue about sustainability initiatives, especially in the urban environment. A reflection on the increasing importance of private players in city- and metropolitics, from implications for governance, to the growing corporate aspect of smart city initiatives, designed to help urban governments provide important services across cities and metropolitan regions An examination of recent shifts of policy and activism to the neighbourhood, as well as to the global level, as they affect the viability of urban governance American Urban Politics in a Global Age, 8e remains an approachable scholarly resource for undergraduate and graduate classrooms in urban politics, as well as a general, wide-ranging scholarly overview of the most important aspects of the field for researchers. About the Author Annika Marlen Hinze is Assistant Professor of Political Science and the Director of the Urban Studies Program at Fordham University, USA. Her research and teaching focus on urban politics, the politics of immigration, qualitative methods, urban economic development, poverty, and minority politics. She is co-author (with Dennis Judd) of pioneering urban politics textbook City Politics, 10e (Routledge, 2018) and co-editor (with James Smith) of the well-loved reader American Urban Politics in a Global Age (Routledge, 2018). Hinze’s first book, Turkish Berlin (2013), compares integration policy and lived integration of second generation Turk-Germans in two Berlin neighborhoods. Hinze has also published in the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism, and co-edited a special issue on North American Urban Politics in Urban Research and Practice (2013). James M. Smith is Associate Professor of Political Science at Indiana University South Bend, USA. His research focuses on urban governance and institutions in US cities. His research has appeared in the Journal of Urban Affairs and the Urban Affairs Review, and he was guest editor (with Annika Marlen Hinze) of a special issue of Urban Research and Practice focused on urban politics in North America. Smith teaches courses in the political science department focused on American political institutions, and in the Master of Public Affairs program on urban planning and public policy. He has also served as the acting director of the American Democracy Project at IU South Bend.
