Doch zunächst gilt es, ein Raumschiff zu finden – und schnell, denn der Mond Rmati, der um Aki Haquulo kreist, bricht auseinander und die Katastrophe könnte alles zerstören, was sie dort erwartet. Ihre Suche führt die Gruppe daher in eine der sagenumwobenen Ruinen der Technikerkaste, die seit Jahrtausenden unter dem Sand der Wüste Vals begraben liegen. Während Reann versucht, die Existenz eines größeren Universums zu begreifen, muss er an seinem einzigen Freund Gunner zweifeln – hat das Trak-Ta-Shah, jene gefährliche und empfindungsfähige Biosubstanz, den genialen Techniker unter Kontrolle?
