Edward Elgar Publishing Research Handbook on Transport Modeling (Research Handbooks in Transport Studies series)

Comprehensive and interdisciplinary in scope, this Research Handbook provides readers with a deep understanding of how to create and use models to optimize different aspects of transport and logistics systems, from long-distance freight movement to urban public transit. Expert authors emphasize the importance of accurate modeling for addressing real-world challenges in the transport sector, such as increased demand and environmental concerns. They analyze a wide range of models including offline vs. online, deterministic vs. stochastic, and time-independent vs. time-dependent approaches. Structured into five main parts, the book covers long- and short-haul transportation, people transportation, and integrated problems and applications, examining the benefits and limitations of quantitative modeling. Chapters explore issues including network design, vehicle and arc routing, disaster response logistics, and railway planning. Ultimately, the Research Handbook on Transport Modeling highlights the need for accurate modeling to efficiently navigate a turbulent economic landscape. Incorporating accessible modeling techniques, this Research Handbook is an essential resource for scholars and students of transportation and logistics, operations management, and economics and finance. It is also a crucial read for practitioners and policymakers in the field.
