Routledge Bringing CBT Supervision to Life: Using Active Methods to Enhance Therapist Skills

Bringing CBT Supervision to Life provides supervisors of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with an invaluable resource for reflecting on their current supervisory style and methods and developing their repertoire of skills in this area. Research suggests that routine supervision practices over-rely on verbal case discussion, and this can limit opportunities for more active and experiential methods such as role-play, chair work or self-practice of CBT methods that deepen therapist understanding of theory and practice. This book explains why supervision needs to be a more active experience as well as how to do this. It provides readers with specific chapters dedicated to different experiential methods and explains the rationale and benefits of utilising each. Case studies are used throughout to help illustrate the challenges for CBT supervisors, and each chapter contains handouts and worksheets to use with supervisees. The author draws upon their experience of researching supervision and providing extensive supervision and supervisor training to create a resource that supervisors of any level of expertise can dip into when looking to freshen up their skills. The book is primarily aimed at practitioners who provide supervision or supervision of supervision for CBT therapists and trainees. It will be an accessible resource for both new and experienced supervisors in healthcare, education and private practice.
