The Long Road: A Life in Search

This book traces a life spanning more than seventy years, following the journey of a Chinese individual whose personal story bears the imprint of an era of profound social transformation in China. From childhood on the streets of Chengdu to adolescence at an elite secondary school; from the hardships of rural labor amid political upheaval to the quiet struggles of early professional life; from academic inquiry within university walls to reflections shaped by years of educational leadership; from navigating the shifting tides of a market economy to the intimate responsibilities of family life and parenthood; from sober observations of social change to encounters with the wider world through travel in Europe and North America-the author weaves lived experience into the broader currents of history. Written with honesty and restraint, this memoir portrays a life that is at once ordinary and singular, shaped by circumstance yet defined by choice. It reflects not only an individual journey, but also the shared experiences, uncertainties, and resilience of an entire generation. More than a personal recollection, this work stands as a testament to social change and human endurance. It invites readers to revisit their own pasts, recognize familiar echoes in the lives of parents and predecessors, and reflect on the enduring relationship between individual destiny and historical time.
