Description

DreamBOUND is Betty’s memoir of her life in Israel between 1956 and 1961. Born in Antwerp in 1931, she fled with her family to England in 1940, but her father stayed behind and died in Auschwitz. A passionate Zionist, she worked for Young Poale Zion in London before migrating to Israel in 1956. She married a Moroccan and went to live with him in Kiryat Shmona, a village on the border with Lebanon which had large scale ma’abaras, transition camps for immigrants. Topics include her problems as an Ashkenazi who was never accepted by her husband’s Sephardi family, protekzia (nepotism) in Kiryat Shmona local government, and flashbacks to her earlier life. There are stories she was told about the history of Kiryat Shmona, the Holocaust in Belgium and Romania, and the primitive conditions faced by early immigrants to Israel. The title DreamBOUND reflects her isolation and her frequent retreat into her own imagination. She returned to England for health reasons in 1961 and died in 2023. The hardback and Kindle versions have colour photographs, but the paperback has black and white photographs in order to keep the price down.
