The Brewers' Book is a remarkable survival, written in a mixture of Latin, Norman French and English and recording the life of this craft and fraternity. The volume details entries to the freedom of the craft, annual payments, lists of those who bought cloth for livery gowns, and building work including the construction of their almshouse. Ale brewers faced competition from beer brewers, and hostility from mayor Richard Whittington who set harsh penalties for their misdemeanours.
