Description
The Guide to the Human Genome is an extensive online resource (also available in print) that provides easy access to information about the human genome. It consists of ~40,000 gene information entries, each of which presents characteristics of the encoded protein, its relatedness to proteins in other species, and direct links to resources at NCBI. Each alternatively spliced transcript and protein isoform is presented on a separate page, and all pages are fully searchable. Additionally, the author, Stewart Scherer, has compiled information about their biological functions into 16 chapters with nearly 300 subsections; these chapters are available both online and in print. The information in these chapters ranges from basic facts and figures about the genome itself (how many genes, their sizes, how they are distributed on the chromosomes, etc.) through details of genes involved in basic molecular processes (gene expression, replication, repair, etc.) up through cellular and developmental processes. Because this organizational structure reflects that of typical textbooks, The Guide can be used in parallel with traditional undergraduate and graduate courses, providing a genomics dimension and experience of tracking down genes underpinning processes of interest.
