The Evolution of Electoral and Party Systems in the Nordic Countries offers a systematic account of how elections, parties, and representative institutions have developed in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden from the nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth. Edited by Bernard Grofman and Arend Lijphart, the volume brings together leading country specialists, including Jørgen Elklit, Jan Sundberg, Ólafur Th. Hardarson, Bernt Aardal, and Bo Särlvik. Each chapter traces a national trajectory from early restricted suffrage and plurality rules to the adoption and refinement of list-based proportional representation, mixed systems, and open lists. The authors show how choices of electoral formula (d’Hondt, modified Sainte-Laguë, largest remainders), district magnitude, legal thresholds, and assembly size shaped party fragmentation, coalition patterns, and cabinet stability.
