Description

Dengue fever, and its more recent severe form known as dengue hemorrhagic fever, is the most important arthropod-transmitted viral disease of humans in the world today. Each year 50-100 million cases of dengue fever and several hundred thousand cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever occur. The dengue pandemic has intensified in the past 20 years, with expanding geographical distribution of both the mosquito vector and the viruses, and increased epidemic activity. Today, dengue is a global disease of the tropics, and is one of the most important emerging tropical diseases, with over half of the world population at risk. Research on dengue viruses and the diseases they cause has expanded greatly in the last two decades. However until now there has been no comprehensive volume to summarize and synthesize such information. This book fills this gap. It covers all relevant topics including history, epidemiology, virus-vector relationships, transmission, clinical aspects and treatment, the viruses and immune responses, as well as prevention and control. Written by international authorities from the Americas, Asia, Europe and Australia, the book represents an essential resource for research students and scientists, public health officials and physicians concerned with tropical medicine, virology, medical entomology and public health.
