Book Overview This book brings together leading technical experts from government, academia, and industry to discuss some of the many ways in which industry is seeking to decarbonize. Climate and environmental stewardship are playing an increasingly prominent role in strategic investment. When managing their investment portfolios, many major institutional investors are engaging in risk management for climate change. These changes in the financial sector are driving innovation as companies strive to reduce their perceived risk associated with climate change. The need for low carbon energy, low carbon materials synthesis, and material recyclability is leading to major advances in the science and engineering of materials and energy. Exciting new technological advances are being made which are poised to transform many parts of the industry including energy storage, fuels and engine design, refining, and materials manufacturing. Fourth industrial revolution (4IR) drivers, such as additive manufacturing and nanoengineering, are being applied to achieving sustainable materials. This book addresses the topic of energy and materials sustainability through a sampling of the spectrum of technologies showing promise and practical value in the industry for optimizing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The chapters span numerous disciplines including synthetic chemistry, nanoengineering, materials science, chemical engineering, and regulatory policy. The chapter authors are internationally renowned and of diverse backgrounds from government, academia, and industry. Editor Peter J. Boul received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Rice University in 2002. From 2002-2004 he was a Chateaubriand Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institut de Science et d'Ingénierie Supramoléculaires in Strasbourg, France. Dr. Boul has held various positions at NASA and in oil and gas at Halliburton and Aramco. He is currently Director of Composites at Lyten, Inc. in San Jose, California where he leads a team developing sustainable next generation composites with 3D graphene. Dr. Boul’s research has been cited over 18,000 times and at this time he has an h-index of 33.
