Description
This work is the second volume of a trilogy on Charles I, published in England on the third centenary of his death. Discounting the story about Charles being a tyrant, Dr Wingfield-Stratford is concerned with the events in Charles' life from 1637 to 1643. During this period the authority of the English monarchy was plotted against and finally overthrown by a group of wealthy Parliamentarians led by Pym, who used the military genius of Cromwell to defeat the Royalist troops. Pym's remarkable power over the influential group in the Commons is responsible for the sarcastic title "King Pym"; as the man ultimately responsible for Charles' deposition, he stands at the beginning of our modern era of constitutional monarchy. --- Reprint of the 1949 edition published by Hollis & Carter, London.
